National Safety Month: 5 Common NYC Workplace Hazards & Your Rights

Every June, National Safety Month reminds us how quickly a normal workday can change. One slip, one falling object, one faulty machine — and suddenly you’re hurt and unsure what comes next.

If that’s where you are right now, take a breath. You have rights, and knowing them puts you back in control.

This post walks through five of the most common workplace hazards we see across New York City —and what your options are if one of them injures you.

Why Workplace Safety Matters in NYC

New York City runs on its workers — from high-rise construction crews to warehouse teams to office staff. With that much activity packed into one city, hazards are everywhere.

National Safety Month is a good moment to pause and ask a simple question: do you know what todo if you’re hurt on the job?

The five hazards below cause a large share of the workplace injuries we see. For each one, here’s what tends to happen — and the rights that protect you.

1. Slips, Trips, and Falls

These are among the most common workplace injuries anywhere, and NYC is no exception.

Common causes include:

•     Wet or freshly mopped floors with no warning sign

•     Cluttered walkways and loose cords

•     Poor lighting in stairwells or back areas

•     Uneven or damaged flooring

A fall can lead to anything from a sprained wrist to a serious head or back injury. If unsafe conditions caused your fall, you may have a workers’ compensation claim — and sometimes a separate claim if a third party was responsible for the hazard.

2. Falls From Heights

For construction workers, roofers, and maintenance crews, falls from heights are a serious and sometimes life-altering danger.

These often involve:

•     Unsecured or missing scaffolding

•     Defective or improperly placed ladders

•     Open floor edges without guardrails

•     Missing fall-protection equipment

New York offers strong protections here. Labor Law sections 240 and 241 hold owners and contractors accountable for many gravity-related hazards on a job site. These cases can be complex, so it’s worth having them reviewed closely.

3. Struck-By Injuries

Getting struck by a falling, swinging, or moving object is another frequent cause of serious harm — especially on busy construction and warehouse sites.

Examples include:

•     Tools or materials dropped from above

•     Loads shifting off a crane or hoist

•     Moving vehicles or equipment in tight spaces

Depending on how it happened and who was at fault, you may be able to pursue workers’ comp benefits and, in some cases, a third-party claim against another party whose negligence contributed.

4. Machinery and Equipment Accidents

Heavy machinery saves time — but it can cause devastating injuries when something goes wrong.

Hazards in this category include:

•     Forklifts and other powered equipment

•     Machines without proper guards

•     Equipment that malfunctions or isn’t maintained

•     Inadequate training on dangerous tools

When defective equipment plays a role, the manufacturer or maintenance company may share responsibility — which can open the door to a claim beyond workers’ comp.

5. Repetitive Stress and Overexertion

Not every workplace injury happens in a single dramatic moment. Many build up over time.

These include:

•     Back and shoulder injuries from heavy lifting

•     Carpal tunnel and other repetitive-motion conditions

•     Strains from awkward or repeated movements

These injuries are just as real — and just as covered — as sudden accidents. If your job caused or worsened the condition, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits.

What to Do If You’re Injured at Work

If you’re hurt on the job in NYC, a few early steps can protect both your health and your claim:

•     Report the injury to your employer as soon as possible

•     Get medical attention right away and keep records

•     Write down what happened while it’s fresh

•     Talk to an attorney before accepting any settlement

Every situation is different, and this post is meant to educate, not replace legal advice. A quick conversation can help you understand which rights apply to your case.
